Ottawa inventor Jay Conohan walked into the Design 1st office in January 2013 with a product idea and the enthusiasm to dive headfirst into the product development process. Now 10 months later, he has a working prototype, Kickstarter campaign and is preparing for the ABC Kids Expo in Las Vegas to showcase his product. Here’s a quick summary of Jay’s journey and how he re-invented toddler bath time.

The Product Idea

Like many inventors, Jay stumbled across the “Bath and Play” product idea by accident; literally, his son Ronyn fell in the bathtub while trying to standup. After an online search for a product that would allow Ronyn to safely stand and explore the bathtub came up empty Jay decided to invent one.

The first step was meeting with the Design 1st team and fleshing out possible design concepts, various concept sketches are shown below:

Detailed Design and Prototyping

After several design discussions with Jay, a product concept was chosen that met all the design requirements including:

  • Fit in any standard size bathtub
  • Foldable and light weight design for easy storage
  • Waterproof, durable and safe mate
  • Accommodate various accessories

The next step was building the finalized design concept and all its custom parts in Solidworks, a 3D CAD program. This step involved defining the geometry, features and function that would bring the product idea to life. Once complete, a fabricator was sourced to build a durable foam prototype using the 3D CAD files as shown below:

Kickstarter Campaign

With a working prototype, design files and pricing information on manufacturing costs, Jay was ready to start the next leg of his journey on Kickstarter. The goal of the Kickstarter Campaign was to raise $30K to offset the tooling costs in preparation for high volume and quality manufacturing – an expensive process. The Kickstarter campaign would also offer the opportunity for new parents to be the first to own a “Bath and Play” along with creative minds to design accessories for it.

Launched on September 30, the Kickstarter campaign got off to a great start reaching 20% of the funding goal with 20 Backers. To get look at how it all came together check-out Jay’s Kickstarter video below:

CBC Go Public ‘s Investigative Team Asked Design 1st For Expert Opinion

Design 1st President Kevin Bailey gave expert analysis on CBC Go Public’s investigation of an inventor’s complaint that Tim Horton’s took their idea.

CBC Go Public’s Investigative Report Featuring Design 1st President Kevin Bailey (2:18min)

Ahead of the interview with CBC Dragons’ Den host Diane Buckner, Kevin ran an in-house experiment looking at how likely it would be for separate individuals to come up with similar product designs.

The experiment gave three Design 1st product designers the challenge of designing a hands-free lid applicator without any prior knowledge of the situation.

The result: eight different types of applications and none matched the inventor’s solution.

Images of the various coffee lid applicator design concepts

“”It’s David and Goliath,” said Kevin Bailey, CEO, Design 1st.

“”And for the most part, I don’t think companies are predisposed to take inventors’ ideas. They want a solution. I think that’s where things fall apart; inventors have to do design and create the business at the same time, and are maybe too slow for the engine that requires the goods.”

Go Public asked Tim Hortons about Bailey’s findings. The company’s reply: “We were not involved in the design of any of the products that we evaluated and cannot speak to any similarities in their designs.”

Provided custom services to ensure first of its kind, all-in-one toothbrush + toothpaste that’s reusable (30x), custom land paddle and next-generation woodworking router successfully delivered to market.

September 8, 2021Design 1st, one of the most trusted full-service product design-engineering firms across North America, today announced a new crop of custom products recently launched in market.

The products include FunkkOFF! TeethRefreshers®, the only reusable (30x) toothbrush + toothpaste product; the SUPStick land paddle , a custom land paddle for competitive Stand UP Paddle training and commuting; and JessEM Tool Company’s next-generation woodworking router, all recently went into mass production and successfully launched in market.

In addition to design services for each of the new products, Design 1st set up and coordinated the contract manufacturers for FunkkOFF! and SUPStick and guided them through the manufacturing process, ensuring that current pandemic impact on the global manufacturing and supply chain industry had minimal impact on product delivery to market.

“We believe that with the right design partner, any entrepreneur or organization has the ability to successfully design and deliver a new product innovation to market,” said Kevin Bailey, CEO at Design 1st.

“Choosing and working closely with a Contract Manufacturer during design transfer is one of the most critical stages of the product development process. We are thrilled to see the results of our partnerships with FunkkOFF!, SUPStick, and JessEM Tool Company as each has reached an important milestone in their business journey – successfully contracting a manufacturing partner and delivering first product to their customers.”

Revolutionary On-the-Go and Reusable (30x) Toothbrush + Toothpaste

Launched July 2nd, 2021, the multi-patented FunkkOFF! TeethRefreshers® is owned by FunkkOFF!® Inc., a fun and irreverent beauty lifestyle brand. FunkkOFF! TeethRefreshers® is their flagship product described as the “1st Beauty Essential for Your Teeth” and a must have with you when you’re on-the-go to refresh your teeth. It is elegant and easy to use – just twist the bottom, brush, rinse and smile! FunkkOFF! TeethRefreshers® is fast becoming the ‘secret weapon’ in your purse or pocket that gives you a confident, fresh and white smile anywhere you go.

“Design 1st was a great partner that helped us bring our product to life,” said Sonia Hounsell, Co-Founder, FunkkOFF!® Inc.

Compact and reusable by design, FunkkOFF! TeethRefreshers® is environmentally friendly and contains all natural, proprietary tooth gel, which is SLS-Free, Fluoride-Free, BPA-Free, Gluten-Free and Vegan.

“The Design 1st team helped us in so many aspects, from the prototype development and testing standpoint, to selecting a contract manufacturer that ensured we had all the necessary components ordered and were ready for mass production,” added Hounsell.

Supporting the Paddle Enthusiast with the Ultimate Land Paddle

The SUPStick was inspired by the market need for a land paddle that could be used for competitive paddler training during the off season, or when accessibility to water was a challenge.

Current products on the market did not address the rigidity of paddling on asphalt or concrete and the detrimental effects it can take on the users’ arms and shoulders after repetitive use. Also appealing to the recreational outdoor sports enthusiast and ideal for commuting to work, the SUPStick satisfies the fun and healthy benefits of paddle boarding on land.

“The market for SUP is certainly a niche market and we needed a hardware design partner that implement the design elements that I envisioned, which would give customers a product that really is a first of its kind from a feature and aesthetic standpoint,” said Joel Brennan, Founder, Brennan Innovation Inc. and SUPStick.

“A life-long athlete, I knew what I wanted in a land paddle from a capabilities standpoint, but really needed guidance in how to design and select rugged components and the right manufacturing partner. Design 1st helped me with all of this.”

Next Generation Woodworking Router

JessEM Tool Company, an established supplier in the woodworking industry, turned to Design 1st for help in redesigning a better router for use in a router table. The Design 1st product development team developed a number of unique features to improve overall user experience and comply to JessEM’s high quality product standards.

This new woodworking router motor would excel when used in a router table and offer far better performance in the application.

According to Darrin Smith, President and founder of JessEM Tool Company,

“We had the manufacturing and assembly capabilities in house but lacked the necessary end to end design support and particularly the electrical design expertise, which was critical to the development of the motor controller specifications that we wanted. The Design 1st team exceeded our expectations with their depth of electronics expertise. They also tapped into their network and introduced us to quality suppliers and found us short supply parts inventory which was instrumental in our ability to deliver a product to market within an aggressive timeline.”

March 15, 2022 – Design 1st, one of the most trusted full-service product design-engineering firms across North America, today announced it is successfully supporting the need for clients seeking product design partners with leading-edge expertise in ultraviolet (UV) rays and other air and water purity technologies to support increased awareness in cleanliness among consumers.

With cleanliness standards integrating seamlessly into people’s lives, they are turning to products that help mitigate pathogens and support cleaner daily habits. Design 1st has emerged as a go-to product design partner of choice for clients that deliver on this clean factor and others that are on a path to deliver new products that enhance air and water quality and eliminate pathogens to ensure the highest level of purity for the air, water and food we consume.

For over 30 years, Design 1st has helped guide customers, from entrepreneur to enterprise, through all stages of the product design and development process.

Design 1st balances deep expertise in new tech, product usability, materials and engineering with component supply risks, global manufacturing expertise and diverse supply networks, to provide an end-to-end “idea to product” service.

One area seeing design demand in 2022 is the ultraviolet (UV) sterilization market.

According to a research report analyzing the UVC Disinfection Products Market Outlook from 2021-2031, sales are expected to reach $30B+ by 2031, growing at a CAGR of 15.2% over the period. With Design 1st’s technical skillset in air and water filtration and UV technologies, they have become an ideal partner for companies looking to bring disinfectant solutions to market for personal, batch and continuous cleaning applications.

Three dimensional imagineering of air, water and light flow behaviors requires experience and advanced tools to design new products in the sterilization markets.

“The global pandemic has ignited a shift in how people interact with everyday objects throughout their daily routine, from the air they breathe in a room, to the devices and surfaces they touch, to the food and water they consume each day,” said Matt Bailey, VP, Engineering at Design 1st.

“We have been helping clients design and configure technologically challenging filtration and purification products for many years and it’s exciting for us to have the opportunity to tap into our deep experience in UV and fluid flow control to help turn these ideas into useful products for a variety of applications.”

Innovating in UV Product Concept Development & Delivery

Ultraviolet rays have long been a standard method for cleaning and Design 1st is actively involved with clients to bring UV product concepts to market. CleanSlateUV, a Toronto-based biotechnology startup, is working towards a Fall market launch of a brand new product – the next-generation smartphone sanitizer co-designed by Design 1st. It leverages the simplicity of ultraviolet-C light technology to destroy the most dangerous microorganisms, causing disease in humans, in as fast as 20 seconds.

The device is ideally suited for healthcare, as well as public locations including transportation hubs, corporate offices and retail establishments. Its sleek design and user-friendly features allow it to be used by anyone, no training required. It is so powerful that up to 99.999% of common germs, including superbugs and Covid variants, can be inactivated in one UV light treatment cycle, without any damaging chemical additives.

With extensive UV technology experience, Design 1st has a competitive edge in sterilization technology that doesn’t allow bacteria to build up resistance to the cleaning process.

The UV technology expertise includes leveraging LED emitters for UVC and UVB wavelength emissions.

The Design 1st team also has a strong laboratory testing partner network to facilitate efficacy of specific implementations of LEDs, glass materials and reflectors, as well as ray trace simulation capabilities to quickly evaluate options and explore winning design configurations that most effectively bathe the objects being purified with uniform UV light exposure and intensity level.

“Despite an unpredictable market our team at Design 1st has persevered through and positioned our clients for success during these times. We are excited for 2023, and look forward to reaching new heights.”

Product Design Trends We See in 2023:

As the world continues to acclimatize to social and economic changes caused by the pandemic, consumers and businesses look to adapt to the new trends that continue to emerge via an altered landscape. Not only did Design 1st play a pivotal role in identifying and helping companies implement these trends through an uncertain economic environment, they did so in 10 distinctive markets, expanding their reach by 43% since 2020. Some notable trends the company identified, and their solutions, are:

  • An increase in unique physical products with innovative battery configurations. As technology advances, consumer expectation increases with it. Batteries, a product typically expected to simply produce power, are now sought to be interchangeable, have a longer lifespan, and even have solar compatibilities. Design 1st helped develop products to fit these needs, such as the swappable battery designed for Levy Electric Scooter, described as the first electric scooter with a swappable battery pack, a solar power pack for electric vehicles, a USB charging station for warehouse and commercial spaces, and custom firmware of existing IoT-connected products to maximize battery life.
  • New sensor technology creating wearable innovation. Since the start of the pandemic, health has become the topic of seemingly every discussion. From respiratory, to neuro, to sleep health, Design 1st has played a role in developing a product to help make the world a healthier place. Calibre Biometrics’ wearable breathing tracker, described as the first in the world, Neurovine’s concussion recovering system, Dreamclear’s compact sleep apnea monitoring system, and Smarter Wake Up’s wearable vibrating alarm bracelet are all wearables that have received the Design 1st touch.
Benchmodel Prototype of Design Client's Headband With Sensors
  • Autonomous robotics. From self-driving cars to delivery robots, autonomous technology continues to improve at a tremendous rate. As these technologies become increasingly integrated into our everyday lives, Design 1st aims to play a large role in its development. In 2022, Design 1st helped create a robotic farming tractor and a robotic sports field turf cutter.
  • The rise of entrepreneurs. Another byproduct of the pandemic is the ascent of entrepreneurship, a trend that Design 1st has witnessed for 27 years. During times of economic turbulence, entrepreneurs shine because, rather than investing capital, they put it to use building innovative ideas and improving existing products. Design 1st experienced this firsthand in 2022, generating 780 leads, a 22% increase from the previous year, and gained 44 new customers. We’ll likely see further growth in 2023 as the economy remains unstable.

Design 1st is celebrating the win of two IDA Awards alongside our client Tafée Technologies for a medical cannabis inhaler called BOWLE.

Bowle is a multifunctional handheld aromatherapy device that encapsulates the ethos of simplicity. The device is purpose designed for the inhalation of medicinal herbs and organic compounds like eucalyptus flowers, tea leaves and cannabis, in the form and function of a drinking glass.

The International Design Awards (IDA) celebrate design visionaries who take risks to develop ground-breaking products. The IDAs attract global companies like Volvo, Logitech and Fitbit and winning an IDA is a prestigious recognition for any design team or product to accomplish.

The BOWLE won two IDA awards that reflect the product’s laser focus on positively impacting stigma and accessibility, which are major issues in vaporizer design.

The awards include:

IDA Gold Award: Design for Elders

  • Part of the Design for Society category, this award recognizes how BOWLE makes medical cannabis more accessible to seniors through an elegant, familiar, and intuitive design.
ida-gold-award-175

An innovative medical device, the BOWLE seamlessly combines the familiar function and natural cohabit of consuming hot-or-cold beverages during aromatherapy with a vaporizer.

It opens cannabis use to a whole new segment of the population who want to experience aromatherapy in a different way. In addition to its radical design, Bowle also lists an array of leading features including an industry performance benchmark with a ready to use time of under two seconds from a cold start.

“Tafée’s mission in creating simple solutions for the complex things that don’t work well stems from the goal to progressively influence the misinformation that conflates medicinal cannabis. The call to action was the void in purpose designed devices that are progressive and sustainable for the health-conscious matured adult. With the divergent design of Bowle, Tafée is positioned to serve consumers with a simple sustainable solution for the complex things that don’t work well. The things through which society can be positively impacted with.” – Bruno Ubakar. Officer, Tafée Technologies

For Design 1st, the BOWLE  inhaler offered a unique challenge for the team, which has developed five cannabis related hardware devices, because of the complexity of imitating the natural act of drinking in combination with on-demand vaporizer technology.

The BOWLE is now getting ready to ramp up to volume production later this spring. You can learn about the Bowle at: http://tafee.com/
