Fortinet - Telecom Switch
Redesigning a Legacy Telecom Network Switch Device
Background & Design Requirements
Talkswitch, owned by Fortinet, came to Design 1st look to redesign an existing telecom networking switch to improve the design aesthetic, reduce costs, and add a modularity feature for stacking multiple devices.
- Develop multiple creative design concepts
- Add a modularity feature allowing the device to be stacked when in use
- Reduce cost compared to existing device, and optimize air flow to dissipate heat
Design and Engineering Challenges
Implementing Design 1st’s proven process, the team was able to overcome several obstacles to:
- Build a 3D virtual model for prototype simulations to understand thermal and airflow issues
- Design a custom plastic-injection modeled housing with a refreshed design, and stacking feature
- Help create a low-volume production run of first generation products for in-field user testing
Product Results
Through creativity and technical understanding, the Design 1st team developed an industry-leading product:
- Achieved rapid turnaround from concept to production in under nine months.
- Talkswitch was acquired by Fortinet, and the product was re-branded under the Fortinet brand
- Setup global high-volume distribution that has been selling worldwide for over ten years.
