An Inside Glimpse Into the Product Development of Lifepod's Virtual Caregiver Voice System

Background & Design Requirements

LifePod came to Design 1st with a napkin sketch for a voice-activated caregiver designed for seniors wanting to stay at home longer and required a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) to demonstrate the product’s main features.

  • Explore physical design concepts suitable for multiple home environments
  • Create fully-functional connected prototype to validate design and technology in six weeks
  • Integrate Amazon Alexa to provide intelligence voice interaction remotely

Design Challenges

Once a final design concept was chosen, the team went to work building a fully functional prototype and tackled several major design challenges, including:

  • Selection of off-the-shelf voice activated technology to customize with pre-selected caregiving features including daily routines, periodic check-ins with users, and sending updates to family members
  • Seamless Integration with AVS (Alexa Voice Service) platform and wifi connectivity
  • Intuitive user-interface design to accommodate caregivers and end users

Product Results

Through creativity and technical understanding, the Design 1st team developed the #1 global selling voice-activated caregiver on the market for LifePod:

  • Delivered fully-functional prototype in six weeks to help client secure $5M in funding to complete development
  • Successful launch at CES 2017, where Lifepod was recognized with an innovation award
  • Global leader in smart caregiver device market. Lifepod now sells across the world

Delivering a fully-functional prototyping in six weeks

“I have worked with many designers and engineers over the years who over-promised and under-delivered. Design 1st is the first who did what they said they would do and actually delivered ahead of schedule. They are extremely reliable and efficient. It has been a wonderful experience working with them.”
