Background & Design Requirements
Belair Networks came to Design 1st with innovative wireless Wi-Fi technology and one request, make the device rugged and protected from extreme environments outdoors. There must be a zero chance of water penetration or failure. Plus a muted, neutral look that blends into urban environments and does not stand out.
- Create over 25 unique design concepts for Belair family of products across multiple environments.
- Develop secure mounting mechanism that is easy for technicians to install.
- Configure device housing around the existing PCB electronics components.
Tough Product Design Challenges
The BelAir Networks team provided Design 1st with some real technical challenges in designing their enclosures and mounting solutions including: outdoor weather requirements, RF and thermal considerations and making the products look good but not so good as to attract attention.
- Understanding of and placement of injection plastics and metal castings to avoid electro magnetic interference.
- Solve thermal issues with a FEA simulation using a virtual prototype to understand air flow and heat.
- Optimize antenna design for rugged durability and strong connections across distances.
- Careful choice of materials and location of metal and plastic components to avoid radio interference.
BelAir Product Results
Through creativity and technical understanding, the Design 1st team helped BelAir develop North America’s largest wireless broadband mesh network. The entire BelAir company and family of products was acquired by Ericsson.
- Through a multi-year engagement with Design 1st, BelAir successfully launched and developed a range of indoor and outdoor wireless mesh networking solutions.
- Ericsson acquired 100% of BelAir Networks company, and family of products.
- BelAir's ruggedized devices continue to be used across North America to provide urban wi-fi solutions.
