Handsandal - No Touch Door Opener
Portable Antimicrobial Handgrip to Prevent Covid-19 and Germs

Background & Design Requirements
The client came to Design 1st with a prototype mock-up for a simple device to prevent hands touching door openings. The client’s goal was to scale the product design idea from prototype to volume production, and sell globally.
- One-size fits all design that accommodates all hand sizes in a comfortable, easy-to-use product.
- Build prototypes for user testing to get feedback on the form and function of the final design.
- Create multiple design concepts with a range of materials, sizes, forms, and features.
Product Design Challenges
Implementing Design 1st’s proven process, the team was able to overcome several obstacles to:
- Create an optimal one-size-fits all device with an easy-to-use design that functions well across various door knob, handle, and opening types.
- Test different anti-microbial coatings to ensure the product maximizes reduction of germ spread.
- Build 3D model for prototype simulations on device material flex and function on different door handles.

Product Results
Through creativity and technical understanding, the Design 1st team helped the client scale from product concept to volume manufacturing in under twelve months.
- Success of Handsandal door handgrip lead to development of a second product for swipe cards.
- Achieved commercial success selling direct to consumers along with wholesale sales to commercial institutions including hospitals
