An Inside Glimpse Into the Product Development of Illumipeak
Product Design Requirements
Once the sun goes down, every tent at the night market goes dark. Jordan Law, CEO of Instant Promotion, had a fix: a hand-built LED pole that replaced the standard center pole in his pop-up tent frames. It lit the tent from the peak. But it was a one-off. He brought in Design 1st to turn that prototype into a manufacturable retail kit.
- Retrofit into seven Pro Expo frame sizes (10x10 through 13x26) without modifying the tent. One-time install, ten minutes, Allen key only.
- Deliver 5000K, 360° daylight illumination from the tent’s peak using four COB LED strips bonded to a shared aluminum core. 36 watts total.
- Integrate a dimmer dial and power switch in a sealed control housing accessible from below. One hand, no tools.

Engineering Challenges
The hand-built LED prototype worked, but it was one welded pole with off-the-shelf parts and no path to manufacturing. Design 1st had to package everything into injection-moldable housings that retrofit seven existing Pro Expo frame sizes without a single modification to the tent, so the system could work with existing existing tents, providing lighting on-demand.
- Nine concept directions across three housing families, weighing visual integration with the tent frame against ease of operation and tooling cost. The winner (Concept A) is a low-profile black housing that disappears under the canopy with the dimmer and power button at thumb's reach.
- Twelve custom injection-molded and extruded parts make up the final assembly: a two-part PC-ABS control housing, clear polycarbonate diffuser extrusions, a 6063 aluminum LED carrier, plus brackets, caps, and stabilizers. Every housing part went through mold-flow analysis before tooling release.
- The retrofit constraint drove the entire geometry. This kit drops into existing Pro Expo frames, so Design 1st dimensioned the pole length, bracket geometry, and spring interface against the client's actual hardware rather than designing in isolation.
Electrical & Thermal Engineering
Sealing COB LED strips inside a polycarbonate housing creates a thermal problem. Design 1st’s electrical team had to manage heat dissipation at 36 watts continuous, integrate a dimmer control, and architect daisy-chain power across multi-peak setups.
- Thermal testing set the LED spec. Bench tests at 1.5 to 1.67 A on 24 VDC mapped how 8 W/m COB strips dissipate heat through the aluminum carrier and into the polycarbonate diffuser. That 8 W/m target lands at 5000K daylight. Bright enough to make a food truck look like noon. Cool enough to run all night inside a sealed plastic housing.
- The dimmer is the piece you touch. Design 1st packaged a compact rotary dimmer (3.7-24 VDC, 4 A max) alongside an IP65 push-button switch into a single PC-ABS module with an amber LED ring. No loose wiring. Full range from workspace bright to ambient.
- Daisy-chain power is the headline feature. One 24 VDC patch cord links up to three Illumipeak units off a single adapter or battery, covering multi-peak tents (10x15 through 13x26) without separate power runs to each pole.
Product Results
Illumipeak went from hand-built prototype to shipping retail product in roughly twelve months. It launched on InstantPromotion.com at $275 with a one-year warranty and patent-pending status.
- Selling now in single and dual-pack kits across seven Pro Expo frame sizes, with additional frame compatibility on the 2026 roadmap.
- Daisy-chain validated. One 180W adapter or optional battery pack runs a dual-light setup for 10+ hours wireless.
- The client is back for v2. Instant Promotion has engaged Design 1st to scope a Pro version: higher output, multi-color, remote and app control, battery indicator. Driven by retail traction on the launch product.
